A free Saturday with a toddler in New York doesn't have to start with an hour of searching. It can start with one question: how old is your child?

Quick answer

The easiest free things to do with kids in NYC are parks, playgrounds and public libraries, plus museums, zoos and aquariums that let the youngest kids in free. WeekendVibe finds both: pick Under 2, 3, 4 or 5 and it lists the places your child gets in free across NYC and Hudson County, NJ, along with more than 1,500 free parks, playgrounds, libraries and community centers, closest first. It's free, and you don't need an account.

Finding free kids activities in NYC usually means checking dozens of websites: one museum is free for kids under 5, a zoo is free for under 3, another only for babies. WeekendVibe puts those rules in one list, sorted by your child's age and how far each place is from you.

What is WeekendVibe?

WeekendVibe is a free finder for places where young kids get in free. It covers New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island) and Hudson County, NJ (Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, West New York, North Bergen, Bayonne and nearby towns), plus a few family day trips in New Jersey and New York.

It brings together two kinds of places:

  • Places that are free for young kids. Museums, zoos, an aquarium, art centers and amusement parks where children under a certain age get in free, each labeled with the age, such as "Free for Under 3", next to the adult price.
  • Places that are free for everyone. More than 1,500 parks, playgrounds, public libraries and community centers, including over 1,000 parks and more than 240 playgrounds.

How do you find free activities for kids under 2–5 in NYC?

WeekendVibe on a phone: pick your child's age (Under 2), then see places where they get in free, like Liberty Science Center, the Intrepid Museum and Central Park Zoo
Pick an age, then scroll the places your child gets into free.
  1. Pick your child's age. Under "Show me places FREE for", choose Under 2, Under 3, Under 4, Under 5 or All ages. "Under 5" means 4 and younger. Pick "Under 3" and you'll see every place where a 2-year-old gets in free, including places that are free for under 4 and under 5.
  2. Add the always-free places. Turn on Include all-ages places to add parks, playgrounds, libraries and community centers to the list. Leave it off to see only the age-specific deals.
  3. Choose the type of place. Tap one or more chips: Library, Community Center, Park, Playground, Farm, Museum, Art Center, Zoo, Aquarium or Amusement Park. The chip colors match the pins on the map.
  4. Sort by distance. Tap Use my current location and places are sorted closest first, with the miles on each card. Your location stays on your device. Without it, distances are measured from Grove St PATH in downtown Jersey City.
  5. Switch between List and Map. The map starts with the 3 places closest to you and shows more as you zoom out or drag. Tap Show all to see every pin, or My location to jump back to where you are.
  6. Get directions. Tap a place to open it in Apple Maps or Google Maps.
  7. Save and share. Tap the heart to save a place (with a free account, so your list syncs between devices) and find it later under My saved spots. Tap share to send a place to your partner or a friend.
